8 Days in Santorini

There’s nothing like appreciating the coming of Fall after two and a half weeks of Greece in late Summer. It was hard to decide where to go with so many options but I settled on Zakynthos, Athens, and Santorini. Santorini was to make up the biggest part.

Like many girls of my generation; my introduction to Greece was through the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. I did not realize until I was actually on the island that it had been filmed on Santorini. I heard some Australians talking about where Lena’s grandmother’s house was but I must admit I did not look out for it.

That famous Oia view

I chose Santorini for it’s intricately layered cave houses and the blue and white churches which scale the cliff overlooking the caldera. I also think I was subliminally brainwashed over the past year, as I saw this picture often in my Instagram feed. It seemed like this small Greek island is on everyone’s bucket list currently.

We stayed in Oia for eight days which gave us plenty of time to enjoy that caldera view that we were paying for. And what a view.  As our guide, Fotis, put it on our fab Santorini Wine Roads Tour “Every Greek island is beautiful, but Santorini is truly unique’’. 4 couples, 3 wineries, 13 wines and 1 golden Mercedes bus, made for a major highlight.

The Santorini sunset is world famous. Michael and I joined the crowds to get a good spot to watch it 2 hours before. Luckily it was that kind of holiday; oodles of time. We found it to be quite overrated and like every other sunset. But maybe we’ve been spoiled in New Zealand.
One of the Points of interest on the hike from Oia to Fira. This is the #1 thing to do on Santorini for just about every Google search result. Highly recommended; as long as you start the 10KM’s early in the day!
